The Pet Yellow Pages, a printed directory of more than 2,000 animal-related businesses being run in and around Sacramento, CA, was recently published by an individual who has been producing specialized telephone books for more than 10 years.

The directory provides information about not only pet stores, breeders, groomers, trainers and veterinarians, but animal shelters and rescue groups.

Pet healthcare tips offered by University of California - Davis veterinarians can also be found in the publication.

"A majority of people treat their pets as their children," Moe Shafiee, who spent more than a year conducting research for the directory before publishing it, told a Sacramento Business Journal reporter. "Most pets have their own beds, their own food and their own personal stuff. My research indicated that once a phone book was published only for pets, consumers would tend to look at it as their pets' phone book."

"Pet-sitting businesses — and pet businesses in general — need this exposure," said Always TLC Pet Sitting owner Russ McLean. "This is one of the best things to hit for all of us in the pet business."

Shafiee plans to include information about animal-related businesses in other parts of California, as well as Oregon and Nevada, in future editions.
