    Top Dog Does anyone know how to train a dog to respect others?

    I myself am very good with cats but I have very little experience with dogs. My main problem with dogs is that I can’t get them to stop barking or jumped up on me.
    Would anyone know how to get a pet dog to have respect for me?

    Training is best done whilst the dog is young, although despite the saying that "You can"t teach an old dog new tricks" some older and intelligent dogs can be trained new skills or tasks.

    Caracal, if a dog is barking or jumping up, it is not out disrespect for you. It is most likely one of two things:

    1. S/he is excited (barking) or very friendly (leaps up in order to get affection and attention);
    2. S/he has not been trained by the caretaker about not jumping up at strangers.

    If you are open and warm in your attitude, that is all that is needed.
