Regurgitation 5+ times a Day

Hi all -

I am looking for any help I can get. I am fostering my first dog (3-year-old, feist mix, 25 pounds). From day one, the dog has been regurgitating anywhere from 3-5 times a day. I've taken her to the vet four times in two months. Her blood work came back fine except from some slight elevation of protein. She tested positive for whip worm and we have done the two dose injection for those. She also had demodex mites on her head (which can be caused by stress), and we have given her the medication for that.

We tried the sensitive stomach Royal Canin food for a month to see if that helped and nothing. Gave her plain chicken and rice diet for a week and nothing. She has been on Pepcid and Metoclopramide since the first week.

The vet suspects that is it Irritable Bowel Disease so she is on prednisone now to help bring down inflammation. To no avail, she is still regurgitating 3+ times a day and now I have the problem that she peeing my house multiple times a day because thirst and frequent urination is a side effect.

She is always very gassy and her farts are very loud and smelly. She also snores loudly and sneezes on windy/pollen heavy days.

Has anyone else seen/heard of any cases like this? I am at a loss and it just all seems so exploratory with the vet right now. Thanks in advance for your help!

I am glad that you are in regular contact with the vet. S/he is a specialist in animal health.

That said, it does seem to me that the large numbers of medications which are being administered, apparently concurrently, have had side effects. On the side effects of metoclopramide, an anti-emetic, see:

The side effects can, in some cases, be worse that the original condition! It is better to find the actual cause of the vomiting, and deal with that, rather than masking the symptoms.

Prednisone is a powerful steroid and should not be used long-term, as side effects can be serious. See:

Of course you must keep in regular contact with your vet, but this does not exclude looking at natural remedies for vomiting. You do not state where you live, but I use this website in the UK and often buy products there for my own dog. It is called Dorwest and they are very helpful. You can phone them on +44 1308-897-272 and they will advise on what products might help. Their products use natural plant extracts, not chemicals, but they are veterinary approved. Thanks for the input. I recognize that most of these meds have side effects and I've been keeping a log to see if I can find a correlation with the days she vomits more to share with the vet. Two days ago she had a good day - 0 vomits and was more playful, but yesterday she threw up 7 times.

I had my childhood dog on prednisone for 10+ years to treat her Addisson's disease and it certainly requires monitoring. We are just hoping it brings down any inflammation. I started feeding her chicken and rice today again and so far - 0 vomits. I hope this combo of food and meds will do the trick.

I am in the U.S. but will certainly check out Dorwest. :)
