    Dogs Paws

My dogs paws are very dry and crack. He walks on them but spends a lot of time licking them as if they hurt him. Any suggestions to help him.

If the paws are too painful you should take the dog to the vet. If it doesn’t look bloody or infected here are some tips to help sooth the pads of your dog’s paws and to soften them up so they do not crack more and heal.

    * Bag Balm: Rub this into a cracked and dry paw after cleaning any injured area first with mild soap and water and drying. Only use the bag balm for a couple of days so the pads do not get too soft.
    * Antibiotic ointment: Place a small amount of antibiotic ointment on your finger and rub in the cracked areas that are painful. Use this after cleaning the area with mild soap and water and drying thoroughly.

Paws tend to heal slowly since the dog constantly wants to walk, run and play. Have patience and know that you are doing the best you can for your dog. Remember to see your veterinarian if you suspect infection or a severely painful wound.

At night, clean his paws well with soap and water. Gently rub petroleum jelly on them and then slip some old socks over them. If the paws appear to be infected it would be best to take him to your vet though.

Pads do crack and bleed if they get too dry. Don’t use human lotion on the dog's pads, it may soften pads too much and lead to more issues. Instead look into pad moisturizers specifically designed for a dog’s dried out paws. While rubbing in the lotion give the dog a paw massage by rubbing between the pads and up in between each toe.

Good points, PawCampus, but this thread started in 2008, so the problem should have been resolved by now!
