hey, my thoroughbred was severly underweight and nothing seemed to help him gain weight. Try Bailey's number 1 and give him loads of roughage. and always supply water. try lots of lungeing and hill work to develop muscles as well. hope this helps XxX :D

working an emanciated horse is dangerous, you should bring up his weight first, lots of high quality hay, not alot of horse feed, it won't help. Cheak when he was last dewormed and with what. Certain worms will cause sudden drops in weight that require special feeds like Fat and Fiber. Do a worm test and worm for anything that shows up on the stool test. Make sure you blanket in the cold weather, and its a good idea to keep them on grass as much as possible if you live in warm weather climates.

Take your time and give him time to gain, sometimes just the season change will make a horse gain or lose weight. Have him cheaked by a vet and good luck.

Vet should also be able to recommend a quality food high in energy calories or recommend adding something to his feed (some oils can be added in small amounts that can help with weight gain). Definitely ask your vet and your local feed supplier for some help here!
