Signs and treatment
for wobbler syndrome

By Dr. Steve Ting, DVM

Wobbler syndrome is a term used describe a disease of the vertebrae in the neck in dogs. A better term but a harder one to remember is Cervical Spondylomyelopathy. The term wobbler describes a dog that is ataxic and weak in all four legs. The condition occurs in Great Danes, Doberman Pinschers and other large breeds.

dogThe cause is still unknown; however, heredity is a major factor. Cartilage abnormalities seen in some of these dogs suggest that overfeeding during rapid growth may also play a role in causing the disease. The signs of the disease are caused by compression of the spinal cord in the neck due to several factors. Instability of the vertebrae, malformation of the vertebrae and ligament problems all play a role in this complex syndrome.

Symptoms: There is usually a gradual onset of signs over months or years, although a sudden onset can occur as well. The main signs are incoordination of the hind legs progressing to a wide-based crouching stance and dragging or knuckling of the toes in the hind legs. A stiff, choppy gait in the front legs associated with a stiff neck can also be seen.

Diagnosis: X-rays can sometimes be normal in dogs with this syndrome, so a myelogram is often needed to make an accurate diagnosis.

Treatment: Both medical and surgical treatment options are available. Some dogs can be maintained on medical treatment (anti-inflammatory medications, rest, neck brace) for months or years. Most dogs do better with surgery. Prognosis depends on the severity of spinal cord compression, the length of time the problem has been present and the treatment used.
