Working breeds: Samoyed
Origin
This breed was developed by the Samoyede tribe, who now lives in the Antarctic region, east of the Ural Mountains. It is said that today's Samoyeds come from just 12 dogs brought out of the Arctic by explorers. Historically, black and white, as well as sable dogs, were common.

Height: 19-23.5 inches
Weight: 50-65 pounds

Grooming requirements
The Samoyed requires a great deal of brushing in order to keep skin and coat healthy. You'll need a slicker brush and a coat rake. This dog's undercoat is soft and fluffy, and it mats easily if not properly maintained.

This breed is prone to cataracts, von Willebrand's disease, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, blood disorders, eye problems, diabetes, dwarfism, difficult birth, and skin problems.
Breed characteristics and personality
This breed is exceptionally friendly and good with children. The Samoyed can almost be described as jovial.
Uses
These dogs were originally used as reindeer herders, guards, and pets, and occasionally as sled dogs. Today they are most often found as companions and occasionally as a sled dog.
