Working breeds: Portuguese Water Dog
Origin
The lineage of the Portuguese Water Dog has two different theories. The first theory is that this breed was from the Central Asian steppes and was used as a herding dog. The dog was then brought to Portugal by the Moors who descended from Berbers. The second theory claims the Goths, of German decent, brought the dog from the Asian steppes to Portugal. The Portuguese Water Dog is commonly found in the boats and homes of fishermen. In Portugal the dog is called Cao de Agua, which means dog of the water.
