Hound breeds: Old English Mastiff

Origin
mastiff photo     The Mastiff roamed Europe and Asia in 1000 B.C. Romans found the Mastiff in England when they invaded, taking them back to Rome to fight in the arena. They were also used in battle by the Romans. During World War II, the Mastiff line almost died out, but the breed has since recovered. Although this breed is commonly known as a Mastiff, it is more properly described as the Old English Mastiff. The term "mastiff" means the giant breed of dogs, rather than a single breed. The term used for this breed probably came from its ancient heritage, which surpasses almost all other breeds.

General description

  • Height: 27.5-30 inches
  • Weight: 175-190 pounds
  • Color: Mastiffs are found in apricot-fawn, silver-fawn, and dark-fawn-brindle with black facial mask and black ears.

    Grooming requirements
The Mastiff requires little in the way of brushing. A curry brush is the proper brush for this breed. However, bathing a Mastiff is something akin to washing your car. They do dislike cold water, since they have little in the way of cold protection, so washing them with your hose, unless attached to the indoor warm water, will make them uncomfortable, cold, and can be very bad for older Mastiffs with joint problems. Their coat needs to be conditioned after bathing to avoid dry skin.

    Health considerations
This breed is prone to behavioral abnormalities, bloat, eye problems, elbow and hip dysplasia, joint problems, and hypothyroidism.

    Breed characteristics and personality
This breed is massive, powerful, and slow moving. They are gentle and loving, and they make affectionate family dogs. They can be quite fearsome if aroused, and due to their size, they need firm handling.

    Uses
The Mastiff had a varied list of uses over the centuries. Mostly the Mastiff was used as a bloodthirsty fighter, then as a guard for flocks and isolated factories. Now they are used as watch dogs and as companions.
