Working breeds: Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
Origin
This dog dates back to 300 A.D. and was at home on Swiss farms. The breed fell into such a decline in the mid-1800s that they almost disappeared. They were rejuvenated by crossing the remaining purebreds with smooth-coated Saint Bernards. The breed, again established, came to the United States in 1968.
