Working breeds: Doberman Pinscher
Origin
Ludwig Dobermann used German Shepherd Dogs, Rottweilers, German Pinschers, and Manchester Terriers to develop this breed in the 1800s. The dog was originally bred to protect Herr Dobermann, a tax collector, from irate taxpayers and their dogs.
General description
Height: 24-28 inches
Weight: 66-88 pounds
Color: Black, red, blue, and fawn
Grooming requirements
This dog is exceptionally easy to groom, if they are taught when they are young that it is enjoyable. This dog should be brushed with a curry brush, all over. Conditioning after bathing is essential for healthy skin.
Health considerations
This breed is prone to abnormal copper metabolism, abnormal dentation, skin problems, behavior abnormalities (such as aggression and panic), heart problems, cervical malformations, eye problems, hip dysplasia, hemophilia, joint problems, hypothyroidism, inguinal hernia, and kidney problems.
Breed characteristics and personality
The Doberman was once known for aggression, but this has been curbed a great deal. This breed does, however, need a firm trainer and companion in the owner.
Uses
Then as now, the Doberman is used as a protection dog.
