Working breeds: Bullmastiff
Origin
Breeding between Mastiffs and Bulldogs produced this breed, sometimes known as "the gamekeeper's night dog." Its beginning dates back to the 1800s as defenders of estates. They were bred for the size of the Mastiff and the temperament of the Bulldog. The estate owners wanted a dog who would be silent to approach the poachers until they were upon them. The dark brindle coloring was preferred at the time because of the difficulty of seeing them at night.
General description
Height: 24-27 inches
Weight: 90-130 pounds
Color: Red, fawn, or brindle, with black on ears, eyes, and muzzle.
Grooming requirements
The Bullmastiff is easy to groom. They require little in the way of brushing. However, bathing these dogs can be quite a feat if they are not trained to behave properly when being bathed when they are small. A curry brush should be used to brush every part of this dog. They should be familiar with having their feet, tail, face and ears handled.
Health considerations
This breed is prone to abnormal dentation, behavior abnormalities (such as aggression and panic), bloat, cleft palate, eye problems, hip dysplasia, and joint problems.
Breed characteristics and personality
This breed is alert, energetic, and a lovable family pet. It is good-natured to those it knows but can be wary of strangers.
Uses
The Bullmastiff was originally bred to protect game from poachers. It has transcended into a powerful and loving protector of homes and families.
