Working breeds: Boxer

Origin
Boxer photo     Boxers date back to the 16th century. However, the look of today's Boxer is due to the cross-breeding done in Munich, Germany, between bulldogs and Bullenbeisser mastiffs in the 1850s.

General description

  • Height: 21-25 inches
  • Weight: 66-70 pounds
  • Color: Acceptable colors are fawn and brindle.

    Grooming requirements
A Boxer is exceptionally easy to brush and bathe. A curry brush should be run over the dog's entire body every week.

    Health considerations
This breed is prone to abnormal dentation, acne, allergies, heart problems, joint problems, cancer, paw infections, and thyroid problems.

    Breed characteristics and personality
This is a very good-natured, loyal, easily trained dog who is playful and affectionate. This breed is very active and needs regular exercise to be happy and healthy. Boxers can also jump very high, easily clearing a short fence.

    Uses
In the past, Boxers were used for bull-baiting and boar-hunting. Today's Boxers are used for police work and as watchdogs, bodyguards, guide dogs for the blind, and as companions.
