Grooming requirements
This breed sheds a lot. You need a slicker brush, a rake and a shedding blade to properly groom this dog. They have a double layer coat, with coarse guard hairs and a soft undercoat. This soft undercoat gets matted if it is not cared for properly. This breed needs to be thoroughly brushed at least two-three times a week. If you brush them thoroughly and consistently, the brushing time and work will be considerably less.
Health considerations
Akitas are prone to abnormal behaviors (panic disorders and aggression), Cushing's disease, eye problems, sebaceous gland disorders, hip dysplasia, arthritis and abnormal formation of the joints.
Breed characteristics and personality
They are mild-mannered, cautious, devoted, intelligent, dauntless, active, independent. This courageous breed is known for its affection and loyalty. Some of this breed may be somewhat detached in nature, and this aloofness is misinterpreted as lack of that loyalty and affection. This dog needs a firm owner and lots of exercise.
Uses
They were fighting dogs and almost became extinct, but the Japanese government outlawed these fights to protect the breed. They were also used in pairs to hunt big game. Now they are mainly seen as a companion dog.
