Toy breeds: Shih Tzu
Origin
The Shih Tzu (pronounced SHEED-zoo) descends from the Tibetan temple dogs that were bred more than 2000 years ago. Tibetan rulers often presented Chinese rulers with these "tribute gift dogs" and once in China, the dogs, which resembled the Lhasa Apso, were most likely crossed with the Pekingese. For this reason, many people mistakenly assume that the Shih Tzu, meaning "lion dog," is Chinese in origin.
General description

Grooming requirements
The coat requires at least a half an hour of grooming per day, which should be a consideration before bringing a Shih Tzu into your home. A show coat is kept long and full and can take an exceptional amount of work to maintain. The top knots in the dog's hair must never be pulled too tightly as it will cause the hair follicle to die. After putting the top knot into the hair be sure to pull the hair around it until the skin is not taught. You will need a slicker brush and a metal comb to brush your Shih Tzu. The area around the eyes must be kept dry and clean to avoid problems with staining. A clipped cut can be given to a non-show dog to cut down on the excessive brushing demands this breed requires. The more hair, the more brushing you will be forced to do to keep their skin and coat healthy. The beard should be brushed daily due to food and debris that get in but cannot get out. It is recommended this breed be groomed every 4-8 weeks. Regular bathing, nail trimming, and ear cleaning are required.
