The Pekingese has a very interesting and long history. The earliest known reference to this dog is in the 8th century Tang Dynasty in China, where it was held sacred for nearly 1,000 years. The breed was kept pure since only members of the imperial family could own one and theft of one of these dogs was punishable by death.

The Pekingese requires daily brushing and combing and should be kept dry to prevent matting. You will need a slicker brush and a metal comb to keep this breed matting free. You can use a small washcloth to clean the area around the eyes and nose at least daily. Tear stains are common in this breed and can be avoided if the area is properly cared for.
