Toy breeds: Papillon
Origin
Although the Papillon may have originated in Spain or Italy hundreds and hundreds of years ago, both France and Belgium claim to have perfected and refined the breed. Marie Antoinette and Madame de Pompadour were both ardent lovers of this lovely breed. This breed was commonly found in paintings of ladies of court throughout the years. Papillon means "butterfly" in French, and is in reference to the semblance of the breed's ears.
General description
Height: 8-11 inches
Weight: 9-10 pounds
Color: The coat is white with markings of any other color; some are tri-color (white, black and tan).
Grooming requirements
Regular ear cleaning and nail clipping are required. You will need to brush your little butterfly with a slicker brush and a metal comb. If attended to weekly, this breed will not become matted.
Health considerations
The breed is prone to progressive retinal atrophy, which affects the eyes and blinds the dog eventually. Patellar luxation a problem with the knees.
Breed characteristics and personality
The Papillon is a lively and playful, devoted, and protective pet. This handsome toy breed is well suited to apartment living and does not need much outdoor exercise. Papillons are known for their yapping to alert owners when a stranger has arrived. He is a fun family pet, loves children, and warms easily to strangers.
Uses
The Papillon is a happy dog who makes a great house pet. He is easy to train, has good focus and excels in obedience.
