Toy breeds: Maltese
Origin
The oldest European toy breed, the Maltese's image has been depicted on objects of art as old as 3000 years. The name Maltese comes from the old Latin name, canis melitaeus, which referred to the dog's place of origin. This little aristocrat has been in the laps of kings and conquerors for centuries. The Greeks loved their little dogs so much they erected tombs to their Maltese. The size of the Maltese has changed little in all that time. Throughout the years the dogs have been compared to squirrels and ferrets in stature. The first Maltese exhibited in the United States was listed as a Maltese Lion Dog in 1877.
General description
Height: up to 10 inches
Weight: 4-6 pounds
Color: Pure white.
Grooming requirements
The coat requires daily brushing with a slicker brush and a metal comb to keep its elegant appearance. The softness of this breed's coat lends itself to easy matting. After a jaunt in wet grass or snow, you need to dry the dog and then go over the body with a metal comb to work out any small mats that may have formed in that short amount of time. You must be attentive to the breed's fur as their skin is very fragile. There are a variety of lengths for the dog's coat if you do not wish to show. For these pets you will be required to brush for a shorter period of time, but just as frequently. Regular nail clipping and ear cleaning are required.
Health considerations
The breed is prone to eye problems, deafness, cryptorchidism, and anemia.
Breed characteristics and personality
The Maltese is a mild-mannered, gentle dog. It is an animated and intelligent creature that enjoys human companionship, including that of children, and in return is very affectionate. Despite his size the Maltese is without fear. The Maltese is a good choice for people who live in small apartments because of his size.
Uses
This regal little breed has long been a companion dog and remains so today.
