Toy breeds: Italian Greyhound
Origin
The breed is believed to have originated more than 2,000 years ago in the Mediterranean basin, possibly in the countries now known as Greece and Turkey. This is the smallest of the sight hounds. This breed was greatly popular with in Italy in the 1500s, and that is how they garnered their name. The breed was a favorite of royal families of Europe. After the World Wars the breed was in danger of extinction and dogs were imported from the United States to England to revive it.
General description
Height: 13-15 inches
Weight: maximum weight is 11 pounds
Color: There are many acceptable colors, including gray, black, fawn, red, and chocolate. Solid colors and colored with white markings are both common.
Grooming requirements
This breed needs very little grooming. Monthly brushing with a soft curry brush is all that you will need to reduce the stray hairs on the dog. Regular ear cleaning and nail trimming are required.
Health considerations
Not a health problem, but an issue of concern, is the breed's sensitivity to cold. The breed prefers a temperate climate, and if it must go outdoors in the winter, should have some kind of protection.
Breed characteristics and personality
The Italian Greyhound is lively, intelligent and devoted, making it a lovely companion. They adapt to most households and enjoy the company of children and other pets. Though they give the impression of fragility, the Italian Greyhound is a very hardy breed. Their high stepping gait is quite animated, and is proof of this lovely breed's grace.
They make ideal pets and are great car riders. Getting along with other dogs and cats comes naturally, and their excellent temperament make them ideal companions for children as well.
Uses
The Italian Greyhound is one of the first dogs developed specifically to be a pet.
