Toy breeds: Havanese
Origin
The Havanese, also known as the Bichon Havanais and the Havana Silk Dog, is a member of the Bichon family. This little dog was very popular with the Spanish many centuries ago. The Havanese came to the United States from Cuba during the Cuban Revolution.
General description
Height: 8-11 inches
Weight: 7-12 pounds
Color: All colors are acceptable.
Grooming requirements
The Havanese requires a large amount of brushing due to the soft double coat that they have. They should not be scissored if they are to be shown except for lightly around the eyes. Hair between the feet should be trimmed to allow for safe movement. Staining around the eyes may occur if the eye area is not kept clean. Over bathing is not recommended, and conditioning with bathing is always necessary.
Health considerations
This breed is prone to eye problems and allergies.
Breed characteristics and personality
This little sturdy dog has great potential for obedience training. They are friendly and responsive. Some Havanese may be shy around strangers, but this is not common in the breed. They are exceptional with children, and bond well with their human families. Havanese have a quiet and gentle disposition, but enjoy rambunctious play sessions. They are attentive, preferring to be at their owner's side or in the same room, and will alert their owner to approaching strangers. They are intellectual, easy to train and attentive to their handler.
Uses
The Havanese has always been a wonderful companion dog.
