Toy breeds: Chinese Crested
Origin
The Chinese Crested is an ancient dog that many believe to have originated in Africa. From there, it made its way to China, became the pet of the Mandarin, then found its way to Europe and South America. The Chinese Crested was previously known by several other names, such as Chinese Hairless, Chinese Edible Dog, Chinese Ship Dog and Chinese Royal Dog. This breed was carried on ships to eliminate vermin onboard, and puppies were traded in port cities. This breed is still found in quantity in port cities in China. This breed has been found all over the world dating back as far as the 1500s. The Crested became a popular show dog in the late 1800s. Debra Woods is attributed with starting the recorded lineage of this breed.
General description
Height: 11-13 inches
Weight: 5-12 pounds
Color: Any color or combination of colors.
Varieties
Hairless: The hairless dog has a smooth silky skin, which may be plain or spotted, but with silky tufts of hair on its head, tips of paws and tail.
Coated Powder Puff: The Powder Puff has a full silky coat which is a long, soft undercoat that hangs down on both sides of the dog.
Grooming requirements
It is important to use lotion to keep the hairless variety's skin from becoming dry. Suntan lotion should also be used to protect the skin when outdoors. You can use a metal comb to comb through the furred areas of this version. The Coated Powder Puff requires regular brushing to avoid mats and to retain its smooth flowing appearance. You will need both a slicker brush and a metal comb. Due to the soft nature of the Powder Puff's coat, brushing must be very frequent or severe matting will occur and the dog will have to be shaved. You must be very attentive to their soft and fragile skin and brush them regularly to avoid skin problems. For both, ear cleaning, regular nail trimming is a must.
Health considerations
Caution is required for the hairless variety in extreme cold or heat, and it is prone to sunburn. Some of the hairless variety may be born with some missing teeth or nails.
