Toy breeds: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Origin
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is the re-creation of a toy spaniel breed that existed during the time of King Charles II (1660-1685). After the were no longer in royal favor they became hunters of small game. The lines of this breed changed significantly when they were mixed with Pugs. The shortened muzzled dogs were known as King Charles Spaniels. The revival of the long nosed breed as it was known in the time of King Charles was brought about by Roswell Eldridge in the 1920s. The Cavalier in the name was used on registrations to denote the long nose.
