Toy breeds: Brussels Griffon
Origin
The Brussels Griffon, also known as the Griffon Belge, was developed in Belgium during the 1800s. The German Affenpinscher and the Belgian street dog were the foundation from which this breed came. They were used to exterminate vermin in stables. The information on this breed's history is very slight. Cross-breeding with the Pug is responsible for the short-coated variety of this breed. The Ruby Spaniel was added, for reasons unknown. The Ruby Spaniel, however, is largely responsible for this breed's facial characteristics, which made it impossible for the work the dog was originally intended.
