Terrier breeds: Sealyham Terrier
Origin
Captain J.O. Tucker Edwardes created this breed to fill the need for a terrier companion to his Otterhounds. As the abilities of this breed became known, its popularity increased. The breed type was set in England around 1850. In the early 1900s the Sealyham was brought to the United States.
General description
Height: 10-11 inches
Weight: 22-25 pounds
Color: White color with or without limited lemon or tan markings on the head and ears.
Grooming requirements
Even when on a regular grooming schedule, these dogs need to have their legs and beard brushed with a slicker brush, and if maintained weekly, the coat will not become matted. Most find it easier to have these dogs professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks, rather than giving them the haircut they require at home. The beard is a particular trouble spot for matting with this breed due to food. The beard needs to be brushed more frequently than the rest of the body, for some dogs even daily.
Health considerations
This breed is prone to eye problems, hypothyroidism, and skin problems.
Breed characteristics and personality
These strong-willed little dogs need firm handling to guide them. They are assertive and alert. They need as much parental guidance as a child.
Uses
The Sealyham was originally an otter hunter, but today holds the fashionable title of companion and show dog.
