Terrier breeds: Miniature Schnauzer
Origin
The three Schnauzer breeds -- mini, standard, and giant -- are very distinctive. They are not different sizes of the same breed. This German breed dates back to approximately to the 1400s. It is thought to be descended from the Standard Schnauzer, Poodles and the Affenpinscher. While most of the Terrier group has ancestors that were bred to attack and go to ground, the Miniature Schnauzer does not and thus has a happy temperament.
General description
Height: 12-14 inches
Weight: 13-15 pounds
Color: Salt and pepper, black and silver or solid black color.
Grooming requirements
This dog needs to brushed often. Its standard cut leaves the feathering on the legs and skirt fairly long, and this can become easily matted if not properly maintained. Even when on a regular grooming schedule, these dogs need to have their legs and beard brushed with a slicker brush, and if maintained weekly, the coat will not become matted. Most find it easier to have these dogs professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks, rather than giving them the haircut they require at home. The beard is a particular trouble spot for matting with this breed due to food. The beard needs to be brushed more frequently than the rest of the body, for some dogs even daily.
Health considerations
This breed is prone to hypothyroidism, joint problems, heart deformities, skin problems, and Von Willebrand's disease.
Breed characteristics and personality
This energetic and intelligent breed makes a wonderful family pet.
Uses
Originally a ratter, this dog now finds work as a popular companion dog who is friendly and lovely.
