Terrier breeds: Kerry Blue Terrier
Origin
This terrier's origins date back to the 1800s, in County Kerry, in the southwest part of Ireland. It is believed to be descended from Welsh, Bedlington, and Soft Coated Wheaten stock. This dog was always thought of as a working and sporting dog, and not a bench show dog. At a show in Dublin, the first few appeared on the bench and came to quick popularity shortly after.
General description
Height: 17.5-19.5 inches
Weight: 33-40 pounds
Color: Blue (light blue gray to dark slate) with a darker muzzle, head, ears, feet and tail.
Grooming requirements
Even when on a regular grooming schedule, these dogs need to have their legs and beard brushed with a slicker brush, and if maintained weekly, the coat will not become matted. Most find it easier to have these dogs professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks, rather than giving them the haircut they require at home. The beard is a particular trouble spot for matting with this breed due to food. The beard needs to be brushed more frequently than the rest of the body, for some dogs even daily.
Health considerations
This breed is prone to eye problems and clotting problems.
Breed characteristics and personality
The Kerry Blue is loyal, affectionate, and has a good nature. They are courageous and make good house dogs. They need a firm owner due to their sometimes stubborn nature.
Uses
A watchdog and game dog through and through, this dog's instincts have not been dulled with time. The Kerry Blue is a fancied choice of many dog lovers.
