Terrier breeds: Cairn
Origin
The name Cairn came from this terrier's ability to recover vermin from the small entries in stone grave markers also known as "cairns." This breed is the ancestor of Westies, Skyes, and Scotties. It is the closest resemblance to the Highland Terrier. The most well known Cairn Terrier was Toto from the movie "The Wizard of Oz."
General description
Height: 9-12 inches
Weight: 13-16 pounds
Color: Any color except white permitted, with a dark muzzle, ears and tail tip.
Grooming requirements
Most find it easier to have these dogs professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks, rather than giving them the haircut they require at home. This breed needs to be brushed every two weeks at home even if it is on a regular grooming schedule. The face will become matted if food and debris is left in it. Most Cairns have a very wiry coat, and with the exception of the face, for the most part do not mat easily unless left to dry without brushing.
Health considerations
This breed is prone to hemophilia, eye problems, joint problems, and inguinal hernias.
Breed characteristics and personality
This little dog is intelligent and friendly. They are very active and have a great amount of stamina.
Uses
This little bundle of energy has long been an excellent ratter. They still have the drive to dig, so if you need a flower bed excavated, this is the dog for the job.
