Terrier breeds: Australian Terrier
Origin
This spunky little terrier came from a large number of terrier ancestors, in order to provide the Australians with a dog who could be a watchdog and a varmint eliminator. This was the first breed shown and recognized in Australia. This lively little dog was also the first Australian breed to be officially accepted outside of Australia. In 1977 the Australian Terrier club of America became a member of the American Kennel Club.
General description
Height: 10-11 inches
Weight: 12-14 pounds
Color: Blue and tan (dark or silver blue with deep tan markings) or red (solid or sandy) color.
Grooming requirements
This dog has a coarse coat, and if maintained weekly, it will not become matted. Most find it easier to have these dogs professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks, rather than giving them the haircut they require at home. The show groom for this dog requires the straggly hair be hand-stripped from the dog with a stripping blade. Be sure when you are stripping the hairs to do it gradually, not all at once. This should be done almost daily to keep the shape of the dog. If you choose not to show your dog, you can also use a clipper to remove these hairs. This can be done at each grooming interval.
Health considerations
This breed is prone to Legg-Perthes disease and eye problems.
Breed characteristics and personality
The Australian Terrier is a big dog in a little package. He's a prankster and yet truly loves to work, either in obedience or on the farm.
Uses
This sturdy little dog was a great ratter, watchdog, and farm worker, and he remains so today.
