Non-sporting breeds: Boston Terrier
Origin
The Boston Terrier is a breed native to America, and as the name implies, it originated in Boston. The Boston Terrier is also sometimes called "the American gentleman among dogs." The Boston Terrier was bred from a cross between Bull Terriers and Bulldogs. The first crosses transpired in England, and some members of this hybrid stock were sent to America. In 1889 these hybrid dogs were bred and shown as "Round Heads" or "Bull Terriers." There was a problem, however, when the Bull Terrier breeders stated they were not Terriers, and the Bulldog breeders stated they were not Bulldogs. In 1891 the name was changed to Boston Terrier. The standard was written, and in 1893 the breed was accepted and the first Boston Terrier was admitted to the AKC.
Throughout the years the Boston Terrier has regularly been the number one breed in the country.
