Hound breeds: Whippet
Origin
The Whippet is just over a hundred years old as a breed. He was given official recognition in the English Kennel Club in 1891. He was developed in England by crossing small English Greyhounds and terriers. Later, Italian Greyhound was added. His name derives from the expression "whip it," meaning to move quickly. He is the fastest domestic animal of his weight, running up to speeds of 35 miles per hour.
His main use today is as a race dog. He is a fine rabbit courser and equal to most terriers in rat-killing.

Grooming requirements
Grooming this breed requires little more than a sisal brush, spray conditioner and some time. Regular ear cleaning and nail clipping are necessary.
Health considerations
The Whippet is a very healthy breed. He does have a tendency for some eye related problems.
Breed characteristics and personality
The Whippet is a good watchdog. He is resistant to illness and long-lived. This is a quiet dog. He loves to run and requires a fenced yard and lots of exercise. He has an easy care coat. He is gentle with children.
The Whippet is happy, affectionate, dignified, intelligent and docile. He is amiable, gentle, friendly, and capable of great intensity during sporting pursuits. He is not as delicate as he looks.
Uses
He is a racing dog for sport and a great companion dog.
