Hound breeds: Pharaoh Hound

Origin
Pharaoh Hound photo     The Pharaoh Hound is one of the oldest domesticated dogs in recorded history, tracing his lineage to around 3000 B.C. His ancient history is well documented and preserved in paintings and hieroglyphics. He was especially prized as a hunting dog and for his love of close family ties.
King Tutankhamen loved his hound Abuwitiyuw so much that when the dog died, he was buried in a coffin, wrapped in fine linen and perfumed with ointment and incense in a manner befitting a nobleman. Reliefs of these dogs hunting are found in several tomb chapels. Both the Pharaoh Hound Club of England and the Pharaoh Hound Club of America use as their emblem the dog depicted on the tomb of Antefa II, XI Dynasty, about 2000 B.C.
The Pharaoh Hound is specifically described in translations from the XIX Dynasty as being separate from the Ibizan Hound. "The red, long tailed dog goes at night into the stalls of the hills, he is better than the long faced dog. He makes no delay in hunting, his face glows like a God and he delights to do his work." This "blushing" trait has been retained through the centuries. When a Pharaoh Hound is aglow with excitement or happiness, the nose and ears turn a deep rose color and the amber eyes are enriched with a deep rose hue.
Phoenician traders brought the Pharaoh Hound to the isle of Malta before the birth of Christ. The pure breed type has been maintained there for over 2,000 years. There he was selectively bred to hunt rabbit. He is the national dog of Malta and has had a coin minted with his likeness on it.
The first verified Pharaoh Hound imported into England was in 1963. This one dog, Bahri, was the first to be shown in England at the show at Alexandria Palace in London. The first Pharaoh Hound brought to the United States was in 1967, and her first litter was whelped in 1970. In January 1979, the AKC admitted the Pharaoh Hound to the miscellaneous class. In August 1983, it was admitted to the studbook for registration and licensed to compete in the hound group in 1984.
