Great news! Thanks to the efforts of members like you, the U.S. Senate voted yesterday to pass an amendment by an overwhelming 68-29 vote, effectively prohibiting the use of any federal taxpayer funds to slaughter horses for food exports. The Ensign-Byrd amendment to the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Bill ensures that no federal tax dollars are used to slaughter horses for human consumption. The amendment, introduced by Senators John Ensign (R-NV) and Robert C. Byrd (D-WV), will effectively stop America's horses from being killed in the three slaughterhouses in the United States that slaughter horses (two in Texas and one in Illinois). It will also prohibit shipping horses to slaughterhouses in Canada or Mexico in order to export their meat to foreign countries. Earlier in the year, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an identical amendment. Passage of the Senate amendment ensures that this crucial change will be carried out.
