View Full Version : NYS DEC Deer hunt - with kids...

04-15-2005, 08:23 PM
The NYS DEC is proposing to open deer hunting in the Southern tier of NYS on a Saturday rather than a Monday. The purpose is to "enhance youth participation". The number of hunters has decreased in NYS as well as nationally and the DEC wants to encourage children to kill deer in order to make hunting a life long habit. This proposal can be opposed on several counts.

1.Almost 100% of hunter fatalities occur during "big game" season. Thus placing children in jeopardy is irresponsible

2. While killing deer is legal, the state need not create more opportunities to push weapons and the killing of animals upon children as young as 14. ( a child may hunt deer with archery at 14 and with firearms at 16).

3. Public safety issue- Some children who become familiar with hunting weapons have used them in schools to kill teachers and fellow students.

Please call your own legislators on a state and town level and have the legislators contact DEC and ask them to nix this portion of the proposal (ID number ENV 14 05 00012 P " Managed harvest of White Tailed Deer in NYS.) Please write, NOT as animal advocates - but as citizens ie: teacher, waitress etc. to your legislators. This is much more powerful, as often letters from animal lovers are not taken as seriously as they feel we are the fringe element. Thank you all for your help.
