Cat’s Park for Dogs –
Local Fallen Hero Inspires Memorial

December 19, 2004

(Calgary, Alberta) – A brave, young Calgary woman who passed away saving pets from a house fire has inspired thousands of people across the world to donate to a foundation in her honour.

On May 25th, 2004, Cathryn “Cat” Margetts (27) lost her life when she re-entered her burning home and pet-care business to save several cats and dogs trapped inside. After saving five dogs and one cat, she returned to the inferno in a last, desperate attempt to rescue the remaining pets and succumbed to smoke inhalation.

Since her passing, thousands of tributes and calls of support have poured in, according to her mother, Jerrilyn Margetts of Chestermere, Alberta. “The out-pouring of support has been overwhelming. She was a remarkable young lady, and it has been amazing to see how many lives she touched. We have gotten hundreds of phone calls, emails, and letters from across Canada and even Europe.”

The response has been so strong, The Cathryn Margetts Memorial Park Foundation has been established to create a memorial to the life of the heroic young woman. “We have only just set up the foundation and we already have enough donations for the fountain that will be the center piece of the memorial.”

River Park off-leash area in Calgary has been selected as the site of the memorial, which will feature benches, trees, flowers, and a fountain to provide water for people at the top, and for dogs at the bottom. “Cat always joked that she liked dogs better than most people, so a fountain for dogs seemed like the perfect tribute!” laughs Jerrilyn. “I think it will be a beautiful place to relax, reflect, and enjoy the park, and it will be such a great way to remember Cat.”
