In order to tell if your dog is depressed, pay close attention to how he acts. Any sudden changes in behavior or mood could be a sign that thereís something wrong. But there are specific things you can look for in your dogís behavior that almost definitely indicate depression. And if itís not depression, itís still a problem that must be addressed.

It is so sad to see a dog who is depressed. Although I guess it is quite challenging to know if a dog is suffering from depression specifically (since we cannot ask them directly), they can display some behaviours which may indicate so.

My Cavalier had a medical condition which lead to him developing depression. It was quite noticeable that something was wrong as his behaviour completely changed. He withdrew, would hide underneath the bed all day and would only come out for food. Even then, he didn't seem as interested in food as he use to be eating minimal amounts compared to what was normal. Once we got his medical condition under control, it was incredible to see his regular personality reappear.

If anybody thinks that their dog may have depression, this is a good reference. https://pets.webmd.com/dogs/features/depression-in-dogs#1
