You wouldn't think that a python would want to take on such a powerful opponent ....

And the battle lasted for 5 hours ...

Then sometimes the Alligator and Python both lose!

On a smaller scale I personally watched for almost an hour a bullfrog and snake battle to the death. I do not remember what kind of snake it was... But they were near the shore of the Gila River here in New Mexico and the Snake was trying to swallow the frog from the rear end first but could not get his mouth around the frog's rear legs. His legs were folding forward as the snake was trying to swallow it. The Frog kept trying to drag the snake into the water to try and drown it. The snake would almost tie it's self around tall reeds to leverage the frog from trying to drag it into the water. It's weird to think that a snake has a sense to know not to be dragged into the water. After an hour or so we could tell the frog was losing the battle so we moved on. We all had thought that the snake took on something to big for itself and had wondered if it too would die with a frog stuck in it's mouth. If the snake had gotten the head first it would have been an easy victory for the snake.

Can't frogs move backwards?
