I just found this fascinating article, with the latest evidence about animal intelligence and even morality. In particular, note that a chimp's memory for a list of numbers is superior to a human's, and that rats gave priority to freeing a colleague over rewards:

This is a real eye opener! Maybe it is time for those people who still believe that humans are "vastly superior" to rethink.

Very interesting article, My dog had no interest in reading this though.... but she was fascinated with licking peanut butter off of my fingers.. She does amaze me with her uncanny ability to understand me, like she knows when I am about to put my shoes on, even when my shoe putting on is a very random event in random areas. It is very hard to even sneak putting my shoes on in a different room. And she can tell I'm making a peanut butter sandwich even when she is outside.

Ha, ha! Great post, David! Seriously, though, many dogs who are close to their caretakers can sense what they are planning. There has been a lot of research in that area. I will try to find it and post the link.

Ah, I've just found the link. Here is the article about Rupert Sheldrake and other researchers concerning pets knowing what their owners are doing:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2084017/A-Cambridge-scientist-believes-seen-beginning-animals-telepathic-powers.html
Sheldrake also his own website, where you can read more about his researches. He has even written a book of research entitled "Dogs which know when their owners are coming home". His website is at http://www.sheldrake.org/homepage.html

So putting your shoes on in another room may not hide what you doing, David - LOL!

That was a good article, thank-you for finding it. This I know for sure My dog understands English much better than I understand "bark" I believe our close pets do have the ability to sense things. Just recently I went to drive and pick up our youngest daughter about 2 hours away after she had been away several months. Gracie loves both of our daughter immensely. That morning that I left to get Emily our daughter my dog was acting very differently that morning. She was so excited. Believe me she is never excited when I go into town because she knows I'll be gone for hours. But that morning it was if she knew I was going to pick up one of our daughters and bring her back home. I believe she sensed this. In case you do not know this I just love my dog!!!!!
