Every once in a while a homing pigeon like this one lands on my doorstep. Is it okay to feed them or is it best to just leave them alone and let them rest and get their bearings. They tend to leave after a few days. Susan Matoi, Hawaii

That is an interesting question, The bird is definitely banded. I hope someone else here on Animal Forum has the answer. although I'm sure in Hawaii that this bird is able to find abundant natural food all over the place! If you were in Nebraska and there was snow all over then maybe yes.

David makes an excellent point as to the geo-location, personally I would not feed that bird...

Thank you David and Toni for your reply. I agree that David's point is a good one and I do see them pecking on the ground so they do look like they are finding food. These birds look very healthy and unstressed and they are beautiful; their iridescent feathers are just stunning in the sunlight.
