We have a 10-year old pomeranian who has developed blisters/ulcers on the inner and upper lips. We have taken her to two different doctors. Neither doctor had ever seen anything such as this. One advised us that he had seen something similar in cats but never in dogs. A blood test was taken and only revealed a slight thyroid problem. The blisters began at some point with her scratching her face, and we finally discovered that salt was causing the blisters to burn. The dog food she had been eating contained salt, so we searched and found one that had no sodium in it. The scratching ceased, and the blisters seem to be better but have not disappeared. Her appetite has remained good.

If anyone has ever heard of this type of problem in dogs, we would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Thank you for any information you might give.

Has he ruled out pemphigus vulgaris? (Autoimmune disease?) It's not uncommon for a general practitioner to overlook it, as it's rare. Immunofluorescent staining and/or a skin biospy would diagnose it.

Just an idea at this point...I can send you more information on that.
